So about 5 mins ago my desktop lost internet connection, my router and modem were working fine so I decided to restart. When I restarted my computer's fans, leds, etc light up but the computer doesnt boot. Nothing comes up on my screen. So I thought maybe the monitor went bad, but I tested it on my lap top and its fine. Also my keyboard usually lights up but while the computer is running it doesn't. I tried reseating the ram, checked the power connections, tried a different graphics card, removed the mobo battery for 30 sec, however nothing helped. I don't smell anything burning so I'm stumped. Any help would be nice.

Could try resetting the cmos battery.

It's the battery on your MOBO. Shut down your comp, wait about 5 mins .. ground yourself and pull it out. Leave it out for a few minutes, put it back in.

weird that there is no beeping and no video. do u have your pc speaker hooked up ?

I tried the CMOS thing again, didn't work. While the computer is running I tried replugging in my keyboard and it lights up for a few seconds and turns off. I then put it in half way and it stays lit, but I'm still not getting any picture. Uhg, guess I have to look for a new PC. I built computers in the past however I don't want to do it at this time. You guys recommend a good gaming PC for around 400-500?
0 2.9.10 at 7:52am #12 hlve
Try a different powersupply first, and rule out having to buy an entire new system man

#15 yep, it could just have shorted, it would still power some peripherals but not others (or none at all.) If it isn't that, it's your motherboard that probably has a blown capacitor on it.

try buying a $60 psu (power supply) from best buy, rule out that it isn't the problem, return it if your shit isn't working still, and go buy a new motherboard.

yes, fans, led etc lights up. Screen stays black, keyboard doesn't light up, not sure about my mx 518 because there arent any lights. My MOBO LED is solid green, not sure if that helps at all.

#19 could it short if I didn't touch the PC at all? I was actually in the middle of playing CS, barely physically move the unit.
0 2.9.10 at 8:00am #23 scope
But yeh, you could go get a test psu and mobo. If it doesnt work take them back and restart this process.
0 2.9.10 at 8:01am #24 scope
coolest thing, kinda. I came downstairs to plug something into the front of my computer ( usb ) and it shocked the cpu and turned it off, hah. No damage .. but soon as that happened i grounded the computer do hope fully that doesn't happen again
0 2.9.10 at 8:02am #25 smsh
It is either your PS and MOBO. Go buy a PS from Best Buy like hLVE said and rule that out. You can find cheap and good mobo's for a decent price.

Sounds to me like it's a RAM issue. If you can't even POST (i.e. the screen stays black while everything else seems like it's on), then it could be something as simple as RAM. I had a bad stick once, and as soon as I removed it the computer could POST and I could get into Windows.

Try removing 1 stick at a time and booting, and also moving the RAM to different spots and booting (to rule out bad RAM / DIMM slots).

Also, hitting F8 during startup can also bring up the Advanced Startup Menu, and you can run the Windows Memory Diagnostic (similar to Memtest86) to test your RAM.

Good luck!

had the same problem. needed to replace my mobo.

If it's the mobo I might as well get a new system. My pc was decent, core 2 duo 8600 gfx card, and a asus mobo with 2 gigs of ram. Can you guys find a better system for around $400-$500?

would be easier to buy a mobo tho 70-100$ for decent ones. unless you're not comfortable puttin everything back together. idk

#31 Its just that my comp is around 2 years old, a bit dusty and would rather get a fresh PC.

#35 Not sure what that is.

I would usually hear something beep once and kick on when the computer started up. The screen would then display thbe usually boot up prompt. Now when I turn the PC on, it runs however there is no beep anymore which makes me think its the motherboard?

HEY GUYS UPDATE!!!

So I wanted to give it one last shot before I scrapped it. I took out the video card, RAM, mother board battery, rechecked the connections, put everything back in and booted. something on the screen popped up and said new device detected. Then it brought me to this screen and it says "CMOS checksum error" So I just hit F1 to continue and it booted up! Lately I got that error when I started up, but didnt think anything of it... what does it mean? Thanks a lot for everyones help!!!!!
